[+] What is VPS?
We offer VPS products based on technology of OpenVZ and VMware. VPS - Virtual Private Server, is a method of partitioning a physical server computer into multiple servers such that each has the appearance and capabilities of running on its own dedicated machine. Each virtual server can run its own full-fledged operating system, and each server have its own root user's permission, IP address, memory, hard disk space, processes, files, applications, API, configuration files and can be independently rebooted. VPS is the right choice for high-efficiency and low-cost.
[+] What's the difference between Virtual Host and VPS?
You will have the power of independent system administration with VPS, which traditional Virtual Host don't have. Comparing to Virtual Host, VPS don't share all hardware resource to all virtual hosts, so it has much better performance in band-width, web site, email system, and security. User can manage system as root user or administator with remote control easily.
On the other hand, traditional Virtual Host supports limited applications, such as static HTML, ASP, CGI or PHP, and always have some limitation when using them. VPS is almost the same as a dedicated server. Operating VPS is just like what you do on a dedicated server - all system control permission (what is the most apparent difference between traditional VH). User of VPS have full ablity to control and configure system, such as running your own CGI, program modules, adjusting your Database, etc. Basically, VPS is just like generally used server, and you can run almost any application you need on it.
[+] What's the difference between Dedicated Server and VPS?
Firstly, VPS uses system resources of physical server just like Dedicated Server does. A VPS user shares physical server with other VPS users, so sometimes performance of VPS will be a bit slower than Dedicated Server. But, also, cost of VPS is much lower, fee of VPS is usually only 1/4 or 1/5 of Dedicated Server.
Secondly, as for OpenVZ VPS, because of technical implement of OpenVZ, a very few system-level functions may be limited (e.g. some operation on OS kernel or kernel modules)
Note: VMware VPS has no such limits.
[+] Who use VPS?
Generally, VPS supports all functionality of Virtual Host and Dedicated Server. Enterprise or Professional user can establish static or dynamic web site, e-mail system, or any network service.
On the other hand, VPS is just like a 24-hour online computer, and almost all software can be run on it. So it also fits Personal User who need continuous online service.
[+] What is advantage and shortage of VPS ?
VPS supports almost same functionality and similar performance as Dedicated Server's, though cost of VPS is much lower. So the biggest advantage of VPS is its wonderful Performance-to-Price Ratio.
A very few system-level functions may be limited (e.g. some operation on OS kernel or kernel modules). As for Virtuozzo/OpenVZ-based VPS product, you should be arware that swap space is usually not provided.
Note: VMware VPS has no such limits.
[+] What are the features of our VPS products ?
At present, we provide both OpenVZ-based and VMware-based VPS products. We provide many Widely-used OS(Linux) distributions when you choose a VPS product, e.g. CentOS, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Slackware, Ubuntu etc. As for VMware VPS, Linux, FreeBSD or Windows is supported.
Specially, we provide "Port-mapping VPS" (plan name marked as VPS XXX Plan X2). One of highest cost in VPS or Dedicated Server is static Internet IP. Price of static IPs is getting more and more expensive, because IPv4 addresses are exhausted soon but IPv6 still seems to need quite a long time to get widely-used. This has been a great problem to VPS users. Port-mapping VPS is just an effective and flexible solution that reduce this cost greatly. For more information, please visit here.
We provide different pre-configured VPS plans for user's needs. Besides, to fit every use, there is a special plan named "Customized VPS (VPS DIY)", you can customize VPS (e.g memory size, HDD size, Backup size ...) before purchasing.
VPS user can do some basic operations or configurations through Web (using Web Browser). User Web Panne such as VCPP and Pleskyl that other VPS vendors usually provide runs as a big server application inside VPS, therefore it will occupy a lot of system resources of VPS in such way.
Comparing to this traditional way, our User Web Pannel of VPS runs independently of VPS system, and has no effect to VPS's resources. For more info, please visit here.
Besides, we allow user of VMware vps to manage VPS directly with VMware Infrastructure Web Access. User can even reinstall OS with it.
[+] What Operating Systems can I use in a VPS?
Currently, many mainly-used Linux distributes are supported in our OpenVZ VPS. For more info, please visit here.
As for VMware VPS, MS-Windows(need installed by user), Linux or FreeBSD is supported.
[+] What can I do with a VPS? What applications can run in VPS?
Generally, most software or application that used in a ordinary physical server can run in VPS steadily, e.g. server application such as Web server, Mail server, DNS, Database, CVS, NFS, etc.
Or, PC software such as office suite, Mail client, Web Browser, Download tools, Instant Messenger, etc.
[+] What applications cannot run in VPS? Are there any problems when running programs in VPS?
Technology of VPS based on OpenVZ/Virtuozzo is OS-level virtualization. It is not identical to virtual machine based on technology of haredware simulation. All VPSs use the OS kernel of their host machine (physical server). Program that needs modify OS kernel or load other kernel modules (e.g. drivers in kernel modules or third-party file system modules) is not supported inside VPS.
OpenVZ VPS is an implement of assigning physical server's resources abstractly. So, generally, it is not allowed to access physical server's hardware directly, such as hard drive partitions, USB port, etc. Therefore, programs such as disk scan, partitioning may not run properly.
You should be aware that usually there is no swap space in VPS based on OpenVZ/Virtuozzo. Memory assigned for VPS users is memory that user can use directly.
As for VMware VPS, VMware uses technology of full-virtualization, which makes VMware VPS act more like a physical server. Thus, limits metioned above does not exist in VMware VPS.
[+] Choose OpenVZ VPS or VMware VPS ?
OpenVZ implements para-virtualization. All VPSs shared the same kernel on physical server. So the performance of VPS is very high, but some system-level function will not be available. e.g. swap space (see the question above).
VMware VPS runs in the way of full-virtualization, which can do much better on hardware simulation. Thus, functions of VMware VPS act more like that of a physical server, but the cost is usually higher than that of OpenVZ VPS.
[+] How should I choose a VPS product (plan)? Which VPS fits me?
The specification of the plan is important when choosing a VPS plan. If the level of specification is too low, the VPS may not fit the system requirements for your applications. If it's too high, there will be too much resource that you won't use, and it could result in a waste of money. Here is a general suggestion on choosing a VPS plan.
[+] Can I upgrade my VPS?
Yes. You can commit your your request for VPS upgrade in web user panel. And you can also contact Customer Support to do it alternatively.
[+] How is the billing cycle calculated for VPS upgrade.
[+] How to use VPS?
Just like using a remote dedicated server or PC, you can use your VPS with any possible remote controls, such as Telnet, SSH, VNC, PCAnyWhere etc.
And, you can also use User Control Panel based on Web with a Web Browswer to do some basic operations, such as system settings, logs management, backup and restoration, reinstallation, upgrade, running commands etc.
[+] Can I backup or restore my VPS?
Yes. Just like a snapshot, you can backup your entire VPS system, or restore it from a backuped image. As long as you have enough backup space, you can use this function via web user panel.
[+] Can I re-install VPS?
Yes. You can re-install your entire VPS system easily. You can use this function via web user panel. (Note: Reinstallation does have the capabilty of backup, we sugguest that you backup your system files before reinstallation.)
[+] What is Port-mapping (IP-shared) VPS?
[+] What is Domain Name Binding?
You can use Port-mapping Settings(TCP Mapping) of your Port-maping VPS to make people be able to access your web site with an URL like "http://yourdomain:12345",
although it is not very convenient because you have to add a ":12345" after "http://yourdomain".
By using Domain Name Binding, you can make people be able to access your web site with "http://yourdomain" WITHOUT a Port Number.
If you already have a web server running in your VPS at TCP Port 80, to make your settings of Domain Name Binding take effect,
you need to modify the CNAME record of your domain name's DNS settings.
For more information about Domain Name Binding, please visit here.
[+] My VPS is Dedicated-IP VPS rather than Port-mapping VPS, do I need to use Domain Name Binding?
No. You can use your IP to access your VPS directly.
